Globalization and Nepalese Perception

Scholars point out that no single universally agreed definition of globalization exists. Some say globalization is what they are bound to do if they wish to be happy, for others it is the cause of their unhappiness. Thus, there are claims both for and against of globalization. The globalists are found firm on their view that globalization denotes the increasing impact of interregional cooperation upon building greater social interaction. In contrast, skeptics have their view that the key supposed agents of cultural globalization – Coca Cola, McDonald’s, Microsoft and so on are in the business of making profits, seeking to enlarge their area of influence. Considering the views of scholars from different schools of thought would make it more arduous to come up with a single sharp conclusion regarding its impacts upon developing countries. Nonetheless, analyzing how globalization is being perceived in a specific country would, to some extent, give a clear picture. In case of Nepal, some literatures can be found that discuss the issues related to globalization, but none of them explore much on how it is being perceived generally. Thus, this paper attempts to explore how Nepalese perceive globalization in its different spheres.

Impact of MNCs on the non-economic sectors of Nepal

This paper examines the state’s relationship with the MNCs and their impacts upon the non-economic sectors of Nepal. Taking mercantile approach from the realist perspective, it will argue that MNCs have been interfering in the sovereignty of Nepal. First, it examines the political influence of MNCs upon Nepal. Second, it discusses the impacts of MNCs upon the cultural sphere of the host country. Third, it examines the newer forms of social stratifications in Nepal being promoted by MNCs. Finally, it examines the state’s position in balancing the relationship between state and the MNCs.
